Getting Into Photography

I seriously got into photography when I was given a Ricoh KR-5 35mm film SLR camera as a present many many years ago. Before that I had played around with 110 format (remember that film format!?!?) point-and-shoot cameras.

Since then I've managed to save up some (actually more than just some) money and bought a Nikon F90 35mm film SLR camera soon after they were first introduced in 1992. I would like to say that I went with Nikon after a lot of detailed research and analysis. But the truth is, I just went with Nikon because it was mentioned in the Paul Simon song, Kodachrome! Talk about getting some free publicity!

I have since followed along as Nikon progressed into the digital age and continued to collect more camera bodies and lenses. Unfortunately, even though the capabilities of Nikon cameras has increased dramatically over the years, I am finding it harder and harder to get the necessary accessories to build a complete system. And Nikon's once almost guaranteed level of compatibility between its extensive set of accessories and cameras is also fast disappearing.

In the "ancient" film days, Nikon accessories were typically available for years if not decades and were typically compatible with at least several different camera models/generations. However, in more recent times, the accessories have become tied to specific camera models. Since a specific camera model is now available for at most a few years, that also means the accessories also have a very limit period of availability and typically cannot be used with other camera models. Its all getting rather bad but this is not just a Nikon-only problem.
